Meet Michele Shaughnessy
Michele Shaughnessy is a storyteller with a deep fascination for the ordinary lives that quietly built extraordinary history. The Hammer and the Loom is the product of years of research into eighteenth-century Yorkshire, its farms, forges, weaving cottages, and the families who kept them running through hardship and change.
Michele’s love of this era grew from a simple curiosity: what did daily life actually feel like for the men, women, and children who lived through the earliest rumblings of the Industrial Revolution? Rather than focusing on kings, parliaments, or famous inventors, she wanted to tell the story from the hearthside and the workshop floor, through the eyes of shepherds, cutlers, weavers, and the wives and mothers who held households together.
That curiosity led her deep into archives on Yorkshire farming practices, Sheffield’s cutlery trade, wool spinning and weaving techniques, and the social upheavals of enclosure, grain shortages, and the early factory system. Every rushlight, rolag of wool, and grinder’s wheel in this novel is drawn from genuine historical detail, woven carefully into the fictional lives of the Barlow and Ramsden families.
Michele dedicates this book to her sons, Ryan and Liam, their partners Sam and Shari, and her grandchildren Aurora and Spencer, a reminder, she says, of “where their roots are from.” Her constant companion throughout the writing process was her dog, Cooper, who kept faithful watch by her side through every chapter.
